Best Albums of 2000 Poll

As you know, I like lists. All kinds of lists. But my favorite are musically inclined lists. The end of the decade is approaching rather quickly, and with lists on my mind, I’ve been thinking about something I think a you all ought to be thinking about. The . What were the first great albums of this millennium? Jeff Lind is down for the task of finding out. But he won’t do it alone.

From now up until late December, we will try to figure out what have been the best albums of the 00s, by year. This will amount to a total of 10 albums, one from each year, to keep things even. This is how it will work — for each year, Jeff and I will pick one album as our favorite, but we will also hold a poll for you all to vote on to find the PMA Readers’ choice for best album. Hopefully we will decide on two distinct albums to remember that given year.

We will be starting off with the year 2000. I have drawn up a list of 10 albums released in the year 2000 (in the US). This list was derived from various year-end lists from publications like: Village Voice Pazz & Jop Poll, Pitchfork, Mojo and Metacritic. Please select the album you think was the best in 2000. If your choice isn’t on here, we’d love to see it in the comments section (though, we’d appreciate if you’d vote for your favorite on the list anyway).

A. – Stankonia
B. – Kid A
C. – The Moon And Antarctica
D. – And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
E. – The Marshall Mathers LP
F. – Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea
G. – Mass Romantic
H. – XTRMNTR
I. – Bachelor No. 2
J. – All Hands On The Bad One

Kid A was no where near as good as OK Computer or even The Bends, but it was still amazing IMO (and apparently everyone else’s too). Easily the winner of 2000

The Hour of Bewilderbeast by Badly Drawn Boy or Ágætis Byrjun by Sigur Rós

Oh God. Bring on a whole lot of people masturbating over Radiohead.

Ben August 4, 2009 at 1:27 am

Radiohead’s usually my cigarrette after masturbation actually.

Ok flame away, but Parachutes came out in 2000, would have been on a list of top 10 for 2000.

Also adored Fevers and Mirrors by Bright Eyes (also 2000)

White Blood Cells, Elephant, Is This It, St. Elsewhere and/or Carnavas should’ve, in my humble opinion, been somewhere on that list

Ágætis Byrjun by Sigur Rós is truely an awesome album but pretty sure it was 1999 release.

I voted for OutKast – Stankonia, have so many fond memories of that album. Cant really recall what else I was listening to back then.
Although I know my vote for 2001
2001 = Daft Punk – Discovery

I believe you must have forgotten Madonna’s MUSIC album, which was released in september 2000.
The sound was pretty new for 2000, and it’s still innovative now!
Songs like Music, Impressive Instant, Paradise were very good, the music was clever, it could make people dance on something they had not heard before. And songs like Don’t tell me, What it feels like for a girl and all the other ones are perfect pop jewels.
This is definitley my best album of 2000.

I think this is just going to be exhausting. Of the 2000s? Do you know how many albums came out? And then people arguing over which Radiohead album was more epic, or whether Thom Yorke was really expressing his falsetto to the best of his ability. Where does this get us? A small group of 20 or so with clashing musical tastes trying to decide what’s best? And when it’s all over? What is it getting you? A list?

Keep posting the new music and lose the polling. Why don’t we just let a few “legit” music publications do this in 2010 and then argue which one is better?

I know traffic is down, but COME ON.

my personal favorite from 2000 is “girls can tell” by spoon. i also liked “figure 8″ from elliott smith. i am surprised that “parachutes” by coldplay was neglected.

Rush of Blood to the Head (coldplay)
Kid A (radiohead)
Funeral and/or Neon Bible (Arcade Fire)
Details (Frou Frou)
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (wilco)
Is this it? (the Strokes)
Why Should The Fire Die? (Nickel Creek)

Obviously, just my opinion. Feel free to object.

knatterjak August 7, 2009 at 7:20 am

Oh, and Daft Punk’s Discovery

Three from 2000 that should be included:

Dandy Warhols – Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia
Badly Drawn Boy – Hour of Bewilderbeast
The Avalanches – Since I Left You

Reply

Dfresh August 8, 2009 at 11:15 am

I believe Yankee Hotel Foxtrot- Wilco should be considered. However I know that it can’t be compared with the almighty Radiohead.
