“3″ is the first single off ’ new greatest hits compilation album, The Singles Collection, out November 24th. “3″ was released to radio this morning, making its debut on New York’s Z100. Listen to it here:

Frankly, the song is a hot mess. Who ever told Britney it was a good idea to release a single about a Peter, Paul, and Mary threesome should be shot (hello, Max Martin). This single doesn’t celebrate the first 10 years of Britney Spears’ career, as it should, but instead comes off as a cheeky Ke$ha track.

Britney Spears, for me, was always an artist who could get away with the auto-tune effect. It was never used against us; it was always for the protection of our ears (kind of like Lady GaGa’s sunglasses protect our eyes). But “3,” is unabashedly auto-tuned the fuck out. And it bugs me.

I do have to give the song some credit though. It was, after all, written and produced by Max Martin. In other words, despite its ridiculous lyrics, it’s still catchy as hell (read:If U Seek Amy). The verses are completely uninteresting, but the chorus is immensely catchy and, if you’re a true Britney fan, the middle 8 will probably knock you off your feet. If it doesn’t, give it a few more listens. But after today, I doubt that I will be listening to “3,” but I knew this all along. I can’t remember the last time I played “My Prerogative” or “Do Somethin’.”

The artwork? Can people please jump off the Warhol bandwagon? It's getting old.

actually…if you completely ignore what shes saying its a beast of a track – I heart her but only when theres an edge to the track – this is just nonesense. (apart from “living in sin is the new thing” – brilliant)

I agree with you… “living in sin is the new thing” = one of my favorite lyrics of hers.

I think it's okay. It's not her best work, nor her worst work. It's really catchy and I'm sure this song will remix well. I mean it's Britney and people love to remix Britney.

I'm really surprised this song isn't getting the positive reaction I thought it was going to get. I think it's a great song – I've listened to it a few times today and it just gets better, really. It's not anymore auto-tuned than the rest of her songs. It's fun, mischievous and poppy (and has that classic slower “Britney” bridge) – it SCREAMS Britney all over! I'm really excited to hear the rest of her tracks :) Living in sin is the new thing, you know :P

If anything I feel this songs screams ''any pop and/or r'n'b star'' of the last decade and does not define Britney in any way. Not to say it's a bad song though.

i actually think this is one of her better singles in the past couple years… whereas i find most of her recent ones annoying upon first listen, this was catchy right away- well see how i feel once the radio plays it as much as “Use Somebody” or “You Belong With Me”

It's definitely catchy, but isn't there something… I dunno… grossish (i guess that's the word) about a mom singing about threesomes? I kind of feel like her age is gonna catch up to her soon, and although her songs are currently fun… pretty soon she's going to be irrelevant to the youger crowd, but she won't have transitioned her career to the older (her age) audience because she's been singing about threesomes, seeking Amy, and crap like that.

Hot mess sums it up pretty well.

knatterjak September 30, 2009 at 9:17 am

mmm i see your point.. but i disagree- no one really listens to britney or artist's in her crowd/genre for lyrics. And if your're going to pull the “gross” card… then i have to say its even grosser for her to be singing these songs as a 15/16 year old…

i dont really pay attention to lyrics in strictly pop songs like this because they arent deep and very often they are written by men behind the scenes looking to rile everyone up (If you seek amy, etc…)

the bottom line is, you have to be provocative and “gross” to be a successful pop star.

I agree 100% with your opening statements: A) It is more gross to sing about it as a 15 year old, and B) no one listens to brittany for lyrics. HOWEVER, to me it's gross either way so that argument is a straw man, and although her fans currently don't really listen to lyrics, as they get older, I think they will. Up to this point she's been able to ride the bubble gum pop train that she helped build, but what happens when you're 33, have a few kids, and everyone that listened to you as a teenager in 1999 are in their 30's & have jobs and kids of their own. They certainly aren't going to be cranking “If You Seek Amy”or “3.”

I guess all I'm saying is I think these types of songs are running thin for her. Look at Madonna… you get to a point where rational people don't want to see a mom writhing around on stage in a glitter costume and nipple tassles.

well i guess we will see… but look at this http://perezhilton.com/2009-09-28-madonna-makes… – she still seems to be going strong- i disagree when you say people will grow out of britney- pop music is simply feel good music, a pure release- yes often cheesy, simple, and “dumb”-

i think your argument can be made with alot of acts- but for monumental ones (Madonna, Britney, and now GaGa) i thikn theyre here to stay

and as a final point- what would u suggest she do? sing songs about being a mom? her career would end in a heartbeat, because though she is a mom in real life, in her entertainment life shes still slutty, crazy, Britney

No disagreement regarding pop music, but you're arguing “Brittany's Pop Music” which I think has an expiration date that is closely correlated with her age (Madonna has already figured this out. Look at her career arc if you want to make that argument… look at where she was when she was kissing Brittany and Christina: her career was at it's lowest point in years. When she pulled outta that old lady skank phase, she started selling records again).

Your argument is based on an either/or fallacy. You're saying that either she sings this garbage about threesomes and people looking to eff her, or she sings songs about being a mom. There are plenty of successful pop acts (with children) that don't embarrassingly sing about such crass material and land somewhere in between. I'm not saying her music's dead now (I think it'll take a few more years), but I feel like this is the beginning of the end for her career if she doesn't mature. Cheap tricks only work for so long on an educated audience… and her audience is getting older and wiser whether you, or she likes it.

To your final point, if I were her agent I would suggest she start working on more mature material. Her career, to this point, will stand forever, but it's what she wants it to stand as. I think, if she ends her career now, music historians will look back and lump her in as an associated act of Bubble Gum and largely forget her other achievements. All I'm saying is I think she better figure out how to take her audience with her to the next level, or they'll find someone else that can.

(And Gaga? Seriously… Gaga? We're talking about Gaga? Not yet knatterjak… not yet. Hold the coronation off for a few years and let her earn a few stripes.)

haha well i think we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

As for Madonna, look at the cover of her last album of full material- she is still in full skank mode dude. Sure she might not wear cone shaped bras, but she still wears basically nothing on stage. And, my point in posting the sales of her greatest hits album was to show that people prefer to hear her old stuff (the skanky stuff they loved when they were kids) than her new stuff about being an alien and saving the world.

And i'm surprised you think if Britney were to end her career right now she'd be labeled simply as bubble gum pop. That's what people like Mandy Moore and those chicks will be… Britney though, shes already achieved more. I hate using this term, but shes the princess of pop, and no matter what she does, thats what shes gonna be.

I dont even know why I'm still talking about this haha I'm not even a fan of hers.

And- as for Gaga… maybe im jumping the gun, but my gut tells me to look at the past. Her album has done so well (i mean turn on the radio and every goddamn ten minutes you hear Just Dance, Paparazzi, Poker face, Love Game, Eh Eh- and i bet there will be another single released). Usually pop artists that stir things up like this (im talking with their music and their lives in general) they stick around. I think she has earned some stripes- but i will admit defeat if things go south for her anytime soon. Her and her big penis… jk

i will agree that pop acts grow out of their music so to speak. Britney now singing 3 and Britney in 10 years singing 3 is def different. But, i completely disagree that 20 year olds now won't still be listening to Womanizer and Toxic in 10 years. Madonna also just set records for ticket sales on her last tour… people are nostalgic, they want to be young again. and for many, in 10 years Britney will make them feel that way.

i agree–the auto-tune is out of control on this track… and i don't like the “classic britney bridge” but rarely do (unless it's a danja track). plus, it's kinda repetitive.

all that said, i can't stop listening to it. it keeps growing on me, and the lyrics that i can make out just add to britney's immense guilty-pleasure appeal. i could easily see this getting a lot of play at da clubz!!!
