Kanye West‘s prolific former protege, Kid Cudi has recently struggled to make good on the promise of his debut mixtape, A Kid Named Cudi (or his extensive work on West‘s own 808s & Heartbreak), releasing a horribly misguided “rock” album, WZRD, last year and then picking things up slightly in March with the inoffensive, if completely ignorable Indicud.

But forget all that, we’re all about Cudi‘s new, totally unheralded lighters-up anthem “Going to the Ceremony.” Dude dropped this one out of nowhere yesterday, with no explanation, and after a couple years of Cudi promising his next project will blow minds and change the way we see music, the toned down hubris is definitely a welcome change of protocol.

The song, produced by Cudi‘s rock project with “Day N Night” producer Dot Da Genius, WZRD, is much more restrained and rewarding than anything off their aforementioned train wreck. This is something you play in the car at the end of a triumphant night.

Barring the few brilliant moments (and there are a few), Future Brown’s debut full-length feels tired and inconclusive.
