What can I say about this music video? You look at this or this, or even this… and you wonder how these women even compare to this.

I don’t like Lady GaGa but can’t help but watch this video.

I wonder though, at about 2:26 she says ‘I want your psycho, your vertigo stick’ alongside a pretty blatant masturbation sign, how does she get away with that?

    • Luis Tovar 10. Nov, 2009 #

haha, all I can think of is “because she’s Lady GaGa”

    • Leo989 10. Nov, 2009 #

At that part of the song she was listing Hitchcock movies. “I want your Psycho, your Vertigo stick, while your in my Rear Window baby it’s sick.” She’s talking about “Psycho”, Vertigo, and “The Rear Window”.

      • Chris 11. Nov, 2009 #

Oh, ok. Well now I like her even more. To reference three Hitchcock films in two lines of a song is pretty much amazing!

        (see what I did there?!)

The three mega pop-stars you referenced to are all b o r e d with what they’re doing. You can tell by their aimless music videos.

At least Britney and Madonna’s videos are seen for what they are… but that Beyonce video… 77 MILLION VIEWS?! World-wide acclaim… VMA awards galore… I ask: WHY?! It’s just 3 chicks dancing in a room. Kind of creepy in a way.

Lady GaGa has vision. This one and her video for Paparazzi blow me away. She has taken music videos to a different level. The same level Michael Jackson would take his videos (i.e. Thriller, Smooth Criminal, Scream).

I have to agree. I don’t think we’ve seen this sort of creativity since Michael Jackson. It’s simply amazing to watch this woman evolve artistically and project a vision that seems so unique and inspired.

    • Ben 12. Nov, 2009 #

Well the Beyonce video is so fantastic BECAUSE it’s just three chicks dancing. The choreography for Single Ladies is just out of this world.

That said, the Bad Romance video is all sorts of brilliant. Hope this hits the top spot in the US!

Hate to agree, but I do. Lady GaGa owns the music video scene right now.

Lady GaGa…as wierd as she may be at times, is the best thing happening to mainstream music right now. I just hope people can share her vision in this and upcoming videos. she really knows how to garb an audience doesn’t she? :)

I’m not a Lady Gaga fan but I did enjoy this video.
However, I think her ”greatness” is blown way out of proportion and is simply a bi-product of being assaulted with so many images that we simply deduce ”It must be great” out of confusion.

There is a lot to be said about simplicity in music videos, which I believe Béyonce’s video hit the nail with her Single Ladies video. (for the record, I’m also not a Béyonce fan by any stretch)

Lastly, I hate comparisons and believe they achieve nothing concrete. Case in point: comparing Lady Gaga to Madonnna, Britney and Béyonce seems irrelevant while critiquing this video since their purposes and premises were far from being similar.

  8. platinuMIA 10. Nov, 2009 #

Scott, i agree with your dislike for the comparisons…they serve no purpose except to rate a celebrity on the scale of what’s commonly accepted in pop music and culture. But when you say Lady GaGa’s greatness is amplified only because of the amount of material….i dont agree with.
Lady Gaga markets a certain brand that, while not wholly original (is anything anymore?) still is a sharp contrast to what American viewers are used to. This video is arguably symbolic, edgy in stylizing and fashion and demonstrates a story that’s tantalizing, unique and arguably relevant to current events.
Beyonce’s video was perfectly executed, matched the song, her intent and style and is an undoubted classic…..same goes for GaGa; each is an expression unique to the artist, and neither could be reproduced by the other.

I love lady gaga i have probably watched this video at least 10 times today :D

I’m like is she really doing all those things. and yes she did.
it is like so crazily weird, i love it! I don’t I think Madonna’s video comes pretty close to being as awesome as this gaga’s. Madonna is awesome and honestly i don’t know who i would pick between her and gaga. I don’t know about britney’s; personally i think the song is kind of boring and i think i have only listened to it once or twice. I just can’t make myself listen to it i don’t know why. And beyonce…I don’t know i was never really a big fan of single ladies it is a catchy song…i don’t think the video is something special. I love beyonce but Gaga is a crazy bitch and i just love her weirdly amazing music and artistic ability.

    something unrelated:

By the way, I want to petition a gaga’s and dragonette’s collaboration i think it will be AMAZING. I think that ever happened it would make my year!

    • sleepyhead 10. Nov, 2009 #

I completely agree about the dragonette and gaga collaboration! Im always waiting for gaga to say that they’re going to open for her at a show or something. I would much rather see dragonette open for her over kid cudi any day. It just makes more sense.

Even if you’re not gaga for Lady G, you have to concede that this video is a work of art. Gaga sets herself apart from her colleagues / competitors by shedding the preconceived notion of “beautiful” or “pretty” popstar and fearlessly expressing herself, regardless of the repercussions. Not many contemporary mainstream artists are willing to stray too far from the cookie-cutter sex kitten image. Even if her music isn’t always my favorite, I have to give GaGa props for not always going the “safe, sexy” route. Yes it’s 2009: safe now = sexy imagery.

My first exposure to Gaga was from PMA sometime in early 08 with Just Dance – I started playing it in the clubs and got immediate response! She is driven, creative and has boundless talent. Hmm yeah she’s also provocative!
Thanks for reminding us with the comparison of how our previous icons have over saturated themselves in boring mediocrity – Gaga rules the airwaves and the visual medium as well – let’s enjoy this ride with her!

I’m down with everything but the stupid choreographed dancing. Makes it a lot less cutting-edge and a bit more Britney. Other than that, interesting as always!

Here’s a great screen by screen analysis of the video: http://flavorwire.com/49394/lady-gaga-bad-romance-stills-hitchcock

    OK SERIOUSLY,

Am I the only one who is pissed off that she would totally jank sounds from Bloody Beetroots like that?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xyy9ecr7rv8

I just can’t catch the Gaga fever when everything from her style to her sounds are cheap imitations of the originals.

  15. Enrico 15. Nov, 2009 #

It’s kind of weird to compare artists based on their music videos…. Shouldn’t you be comparing music video directors?

  16. Anon 19. Nov, 2009 #

Video did kill the radio star.

Shouldn’t we be comparing artists based on their music?

  17. gabriela 22. Nov, 2009 #

gaga is brilliant but beyonce still kills it every time.

You people are so god awful! you compare Lady Gaga to MJ? Mj should be compared to that of Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis Jr, James Brown, etc.
Lady Gaga is a bunch of random crap thrown into a video where she is striving to come off as cool/unique to my stupid generation. and she thinks she is, because of my stupid generation.
MJ’s videos took several months to choerograph, had a ‘plot’ to them,-and not some stupid one about getting drunk or something. His lyrics looked like they actually took time, as well as his choruses and background music.
To even say “The same level Michael Jackson would take his videos” shows that music is indeed, dead. I can not, off the top of my head, think of an active pop performer who makes worthwhile music.
And Beyonce’s vid is probably famous from the dancing, and while I’m here I’ll saying I’m sick of every artist having to rip stuff off from the past. Beyonce’s choregraphy in her video is very clearly DEEPLY inspired by the Bob Fosse original dance, but she didn’t say this until AFTER someone pointed it out. My god, entertainers act like where so stupid, to not see this stuff. Not everyone who listens to music is a drone, who knows no real talent. And Lady gaga has been ‘channeling mj’ in both this vid, with thriller, and ‘love games’ where she mimics the set and outfits(of course effin’ pantless) of the full-version ‘bad’ video.
Have you ever read of of her interviews for magazines where she doesn’t act fake, like she did on good morning america? shes an idiot. She even said she was bi for only the ‘physical aspects’ of it. Dumb broad. You fans need to stop being in denial. I’m not the sort of person who just hates someone because there popular, I’ve dissected how awful-and stupid this lady is. Now that she has a brigade and diehard, think there hardcore, stupid emos and wussy fans she’ll never lkeave though.
oh- and i’m sick of what a self-obessed-try-hard she is. She also tries to be cool by using theatrics..um, no. That is some shitty-no-talent theatrics, right there. I could do that crap, plus it’s time to make up something on your own gaga, that has a point, not just for the heck of it to seem unique.

  19. Cccc 22. Nov, 2009 #

Oh- and I hate all your stupid fan excuses “she just pushing the envelope, not being cookie cutter” when will there be a time when a women can do this with class, without using sex? If you ask me, shes not breaking the cookie cutter. shes using sex/shock factor/trying to make people think shes creativeor unique, and plenty of people use that. shes downright obsessed with fame.
