“His Eye Is On The Sparrow” was first written and performed in 1905 as a gospel hymn, but the song has been belted out by a number of popular, secular artists down the years as well. Active Child can now proudly add himself to the “Notable Performances” section of the Wikipedia entry for the song. Marvin Gaye, Andy Grifith, Jessica Simpson, Lauryn Hill and, most recently, Whitney Houston were all there before him, but his stripped down version of the gospel number holds its own against the stars’ renditions.
