Mississippi rapper Big K.R.I.T. is really breaking out – Live From the Underground is his massively anticipated major-label debut, and it features his biggest collaborators yet (Ludacris, Bun B, 2 Chainz, etc). K.R.I.T., who pens his own rhymes and beats, is a smart lyricist with effortless flow and a thorough understanding of his music’s predecessors – his songs hearken not only to classic southern hip-hop’s smooth slow-burn, but to the traditions of gospel, blues, and big band music. We love when dude brings in those choirs and massive horns, but they never distract from his snappy rhymes. We’re partial to the record’s title track and its truly massive last half.
