You can say a lot of things about Big K.R.I.T., but you can’t deny that he’s as prolific as he is shrewd: dropping mixtapes left and right, smartly building buzz in advance of his Def Jam debut – the man knows what he’s doing, and it helps that his songs are good (and numerous) enough to build hype on their own terms.
His new single, the second track we can sample from Live from the Underground (after “I Got This”), is “Yeah Dats Me,” and it’s really, really good: we’re pretty much obsessed out of our minds with that beat, which sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard before (a little like chopped-and-screwed highlife music, read as: awesome). It’s fast and maximalist enough to really force K.R.I.T. to go in hard: and he does, with a series of smart, rapid-fire verses. Basically, we can’t wait to see what else dude has up his sleeve when Live from the Underground drops June 5.
