Every song I have Shazam’d on my phone in the past few months has been some ’90s gem I couldn’t escape in my youth and then pretty quickly forgot about once my childhood alternative rock radio station (92.3 WXRK in New York, anyone else remember the glory days?) got bought out by a Latin channel. This might be because I’ve discovered a new ’90s alternative rock radio station because I couldn’t bear to listen to that Bieber / Nicki song one more time, or it’s because we did alright in the ’90s with pop-punk and catchy alt-rock, and those tropes are on their way back in a big way. Listen to this track, “The Throw,” by Australia’s Jagwar Ma and be reminded of the sweeping echoes, funk basslines, reggae-leaning beats, and ritualistic falsetto of every jam you used to reach forward from the backseat to turn up while your mom was driving you to school and your little sibling grooved in their carseat.
