“Guurl” sounds like a typical R&B hook dunked underwater and freed from gravity. UK beatmaker Lapalux’s style is reminiscent of the ethereality of Balam Acab or XXYYXX, with hints of Clams Casino every so often. Stuart Howard apparently creates a lot of the textures for his albums with sounds he records with a voice recorder that he always carries with him, and you can definitely hear the effort to keep things organic. It’s the first single for his debut album, Nostalchic, which we will have to wait until March to hear (via Flying Lotus’s Brainfeeder label). You can also check his BBC 1 mix, which includes “Guurl,” to pass the time un til then.
