Be careful not to confuse Glassnote’s (home to Mumford & Sons, Phoenix and Childish Gambino) newest signee Daughter with now-defunct Providence thrash-punk band Daughters – the singular form is the project of London songwriter Elena Tonra, and her new label is just gearing up to drop her first release with a full backing band, the single “Smother,” which you can sample now. The word you were looking for here is “sweeping” – Tonra and her band effortlessly craft a slow, swelling build from tender guitar and piano chords into a massive, heart-rendering catharsis moment that might make your eyes a little misty. We’re blown away by Tonra’s songwriting – at just 21, she’s crafted a piece of absolutely breathtaking balladry. Check it out.
