Passed from the xx, the royal family of sexy minimalism, to their counterparts, the dukes and duchesses of sinister, cold house music behind Hercules and Love Affair, “Shelter” is a song that stays simple, compelling because of its empty space. The xx’s comes in that allover minimalist aesthetic – all bass throb and soft voice – but Hercules and Love Affair’s cover is creepy in its facelessness, its clinical hollowness, all the nothing beneath that skittering drum machine and head-nodding strobe-lit synth bubble. It’s a fantastic cover – Hercules and Love Affair capture the xx’s vibe through a wholly different and personalized medium. Listen here:
