One of the most anticipated collaborations on next month’s Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, “Maniac” with Cage joining Cudi on the mic, came with a welcome surprise (you know, beyond the almost guarantee that it was going to be great); a St. Vincent sample. What initially drew me to Kid Cudi were his gimmick-free, left-field samples, influences drawing in from Bob Dylan to Gnarls Barkley, Paul Simon to Band of Horses. Even though Kid Cudi’s name itself is reason enough, for me and many other people, to listen to a song, it’s always nice to be reminded that well used sample goes a real long way.
