You could probably find the words “beyond his years” in every blurb ever written about the British wunderkind Archy Marshall, better known as King Krule – dude was born in 1994 but he writes moody, jittery songs in a style all his own, a style that sounds at times like he’s taken the stage in a dive bar in rural Texas in 1945 and at other times like he’s taken the stage at a massive sold-out stadium tour. Here’s proof: new single “Rock Bottom,” in which Marshall starts out sounding like he’s going to sing about selling his soul to the devil at a crossroads before that catchy, soulful guitar pattern gets supplanted by a spattering of almost-dubsteppy percussion. Give it a listen.
