Expect to see the name Mikky Ekko in a few places next year. The rising r&b singer was notably featured on “Stay,” the best song from Rihanna’s latest singles repository, and it turns out his cosigns don’t end there. Ekko’s current single and calling card “Pull Me Down” was produced by Clams Casino, who is known for his production work for Lil B, A$AP Rocky and The Weeknd. And most recently, he’s been backed by fellow rookie Ryan Hemsworth.
Like any Clams Casino composition, “Pull Me Down” gives itself room to breathe and howl. It’s actually cause of a bit of cognitive dissonance; Ekko’s croon isn’t unlike those of Top 40 mainstays like OneRepublic or Bruno Mars and would definitely not feel out of place on a Clear Channel station. But Clams, though clearly at his poppiest, isn’t exactly helping Ekko make it on the radio with his post-apocalyptic soundscape. Maybe he’ll have more luck with Ryan Hemsworth’s 808s-heavy remix.
