Because Cass McCombs’s April release WIT’S END was certainly not enough, we’re pleased as punch that Mr. McCombs has decided to grace his fans with a second release this year in the form of Humor Risk, on its way November 8.
Our second taste (after the REC’D first single, “The Same Thing”), an alternate mix of “Robin Egg Blue” (the “gun drum mix,” thanks to its sharp snares), is classic McCombs melancholy-catchy, head-nodding and toe-tapping despite its wistful lyrical content – “done, done, what’s done is done,” McCombs sings over a sweet Americana acoustic riff, bolstered by those sharp drums. Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij provided some secondary production here, and his touch is evident in the prominent mix of that classically-influenced piano. Check it out.
