Cat Power’s Sun was one of our most anticipated records of the year, and it exceeded our expectations – aside from being Chan Marshall’s first record in four years and her first album of original material in six years, it’s also a more cohesively styled statement than anything she’s released to date. It’d be easy to add just-leaked non-album track “Fire” to that canon too; it’s another heartbroken, minimalist, endlessly haunting cut, with little more than wandering guitar, curiously glitchy percussion, and Marshall’s yearning, achingly layered voice weaving a beautiful, wintery barren soundscape. Check it out.
