Chicago MC Common has been churning out his singular brand of uplifting, socially conscious hip-hop for almost two decades now with neither a decline in quality nor end in sight. Our next taste of his ninth album The Dreamer, the Believer is super-catchy “Blue Sky.”
No I.D.’s complex sampling is seamless and refreshingly unique, allowing Common ample time to show off his skills without upstaging his smoothly delivered rags-to-riches follow-your-dreams pump-up quasi-sermon. It’s far from fresh subject material in Common’s genre (or even in his own oeuvre) but his limber rhymes manage to keep it fresh. Check it out.
