Monster of Folk and She & Him male half M. Ward is back to the solo thing with his upcoming eighth record A Wasteland Companion and a first single, “Primitive Girl.”

It’s a simple and catchy piano-pop ballad that sticks to the sugar-sweet Belle & Sebastian-y twee Ward’s been making hay with with Zooey – plenty of lovelorn lyrics about a titular independent woman, a whistleable, sunny riff, a girls’-choir outro… Ward’s always had a gift for whittling the classic structures of Americana folk into accessible, riff-packed packages; this one might just get him noticed on his own terms. A Wasteland Companion is out April 10 on Bella Union.
