PJ Harvey‘s eighth proper full length came out last week to the acclaim of every publication out there (including ours of course). Let England Shake, fronted with powerful themes and lyrics found on tracks like “The Words That Maketh Murder,” came out on iTunes with two bonus tracks: previously unreleased “The Nightingale,” and B-side “The Big Guns Call Me Back Again.”

The latter is a poignant military style ballad that oozes with powerful acoustic guitar strings and thumping drum patterns; the former, a gradually building hymn that’s even more expressive, with slow 90s style guitar riffs, faint piano chords, and a full brass section. These aren’t even album cuts and they are seriously moving, an easy indication of why Let England Shake is already being called one of the best records of the year.

Charlotte Aitchison’s second LP is a warhead, a sonic sour bomb that conceals sneering attitude and caustic kiss-offs beneath an initially shimmering pop sheen.
