Last week, PJ Harvey announced the upcoming release of her 8th LP, Let England Shake. The notorious blues songstress had performed the title track earlier this year to an audience that included then British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Now she’s released the first proper single, “Written On The Forehead,” one which implements the artist’s early blues and rock n roll influences but is also very ethereal and foggy, with hints of glo-fi and ambiance, thanks to the use of obscure vocal samples and hazy percussion.
Despite the song’s political connotations, Harvey told BBC, “I’m always trying to come from the human point of view because I don’t feel qualified to sing from a political standpoint.” Let England Shake is out February 14 on Vagrant Records.
