JD Samson and Johanna Fateman — formerly of electroclash band Le Tigre — continue to make socially and politically conscious disco punk jams under the moniker MEN. On February 1, MEN released their debut record, Talk About Body. One alternative cut of single, “Who Am I To Feel So Free,” features vocals from Antony & the Johnsons‘ eponymous founding member.
Antony Hegarty hasn’t unleashed his inner disco diva since contributing to Hercules & Love Affair’s much loved 2007 debut album, his most noteworthy contribution being the incredible “Blind.” “Who Am I To Feel So Free” is an exceptional track with telling lyrics about having a resilient, free spirit even when society is bringing you down. The track only cements the fact that Antony’s poignant voice shines exceptionally bright when it’s catapulted by a reverberating baseline. He should really put aside some time and record us a disco album. I’ll even settle for an EP.
