If you haven’t realized that Merril Garbus has the most unique style of vocalization around these days, the following will surely help. The Californian musician, under the moniker tUnE-yArDs, is dropping her sophomore LP, w h o k i l l, next month, and she’s already released first single “Bizness” for free. The French site Le HibOO has just uploaded a video of Garbus playing a new song on the streets of Paris called “Doorstep.” For the latter half of the video, she sings into her guitar to add a hint of distortion to her lovely vocals, accentuated by her faint percussionist accompaniment. It essentially highlights why her tUnE-yArDs project is receiving so much praise; the album version isn’t even necessary, this acoustic rendering is pretty beautiful as it is. As if that’s not enough, Zane Low stand in Huw Stephens premiered another new track on BBC Radio One, called “Gangsta.” The studio cut adheres to the lo-fi/African style eccentricity Garbus displayed on her debut BiRd-BrAiNs, and is chock full of motley instruments. The beat is grimy, no scratch that, it’s “gangsta,” with a dirty bass line and off beat drumming.
