St. Vincent’s incredible Strange Mercy dropped last summer and Annie Clark’s releases since then have leaned more toward the raucous (see her incendiary Record Store Day 7”), but here’s a bonus track from the Japanese release of Strange Mercy that you’ll dig if you preferred her more orchestral (but just as dark) cuts, “This Wave.”
Over a ton of Old West echoed whistling, military drums, haunting piano, and spiraling strings, Clark lays down chillingly beautiful and classically inscrutable vocals. The end product sounds like the soundtrack for a slow-motion shootout. Check it out.
