As we all know, Sufjan Stevens is an ardent Christmas enthusiast, having released a Christmas EP every year for the last five years (now available as a boxed set entitled Songs For Christmas). There is speculation whether a sixth EP will be released this year, but the prolific singer/songwriter wasn’t bout to let the holidays pass without spreading some seasonal cheer. Alongside The National’s Bryce and Aaron Dessner and Arcade Fire’s Richard Perry, Sufjan debuted two new Christmas songs on BBC Radio 6, one a rendition of “Silent Night,” that was apparently recorded years ago, the other a brand new holiday gem called “Barcarola (You Must Be A Christmas Tree)”. Both are lovely folksy ballads, best to be heard by the fireplace with some eggnog.
