The music world has been silently weeping since Mike Skinner announced that next year’s Computers and Blues will be his last record as The Streets; this remains true as Skinner announces the arrival of another new album called, Cyberspace and Reds, due out before Computers and Blues is supposed to drop. Although we can never be too sure what will end up on the records or the cutting room floor, Skinner has been steadily releasing music through his website for a few weeks now, including the electronic instrumental “San Frandemonium,” the humorous and theatrical “4 O’clock” and (presumably) Computer and Blues‘ lead single “Trust Me.” Two new songs have just surfaced: one, an electric guitar amplified rock anthem called “Going Through Hell,” the other a glitchy, dubstep infused “Too Numb.” The former, a new song from Computer and Blues presented to esteemed BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac, the latter is the first taste we get from the Streets’ newly announced Cyberspace and Reds.
Skinner had attested that Computers and Blues is more influenced by electronic and dance genres, primarily synth pop and dubstep, rather than his usual blend of unconventional hip hop. His distinct method of spitting syncs quite nicely with these varying electronic conventions; Computers and Blues is set to drop February 7th, but not before Cyberspace and Reds, which Skinner had this to say about: “it will be painfully repetitive. there’ll be chord changes that have never changed in that way before. the lyrics will make no sense… it will be the ‘ragga by way of duran duran’”. Release date is pending, for the Streets’ “ragga by way of Duran Duran” album.
