Youth Lagoon’s sophomore record Wondrous Bughouse ranks high among the list of records we’re anticipating in 2013 because the singles Trevor Powers and company have been dropping are just too good; here’s another one, “Mute,” the best six-minute, hyper-maximalist, expansively-psychedelic dream of a pop song you’ve heard since, uh, Youth Lagoon’s last single, “Dropla.” As much as we liked the intense introversion of The Year of Hibernation, it’s awesome to hear Powers explore bigger, more anthemic territory, and pull it off so well. The instrumental latter half is the stuff of dreams – wait for the creepy piano hook near the end. You’ve got less than a month to wait for the record; it’s out March 5.
