Thoughtful article and a nice read, however you seem to have forgotten one of the best supergroups of recent times, “Golden Smog.” I think they fit all your criteria and with members of The Jayhawks, Wilco, and Soul Asylum you pretty much sum up No Depression Nation in one, dare I say, Supergroup.

The new as-yet-untitled collaboration between Josh Homme, Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones is a supergroup. Discovery is not. Btw, I LOVE Discovery.

Something that wasn’t mentioned that I think is worth mentioning is that a bonafide “Supergroup” can sell out an 80,000+ capacity stadium.

Good commentary. though for the hip-hop, i may argue a bit differently. for instance, on Common’a album ‘Like Water For Chocolate,’ he was backed by the roots for most of the tracks, as well as during live performances, which I would consider a supergroup, though they don’t fit in with your name rule. something else worth considering in hip-hop is the established MC, established DJ/producer combo, such as Talib Kweli & DJ Hi-Tek as Reflection Eternal, Cee Lo and Danger Mouse as Gnarls Barkley. i would say that GURU and Dj Premiere as Gangstarr and Slug and Ant as Atmosphere don’t count because they became established as the collective.

My comment: great idea & fun read.

Opinions:
New Pornographers – not a super group, members were all from a much smaller scene & became much more famous together than apart.

Discovery – Yes. Marginally.

Damn Yankees – Yes (STYX, Ted Nugent & Night Ranger)

Dead Weather – Shame not to mention The Kills as an established band with at least QOTSA
