[...] Admittedly, I’ve never been a huge Vampire Weekend fan. There self-titled was pretty good at best, reminding me of not so hot Phoenix. There were some really cool songs, but many of them I felt forced at times and were littered with lyrics that could have been written by just about anyone. The songs were catchy enough, but really that was all they had going for them. They weren’t breaking new ground or doing anything incredibly interesting. This being said, there are now 3 tracks from Contra floating around the internet and 1 b-side. The songs are: Horchata, Cousins, White Sky and the b-side track is California English PT 2.The album tracks can all be found at the bands myspace and California English pt 2 can be found here. VW’s attempt to have disjunct singing patterns doesn’t work out so well. The delayed chants towards the end, and the synth at about 2:25 seem like cheap gimmicks that don’t mesh well with the rest of the song.

I recommend only listening to albums that you can still listen to for more than a month. All this flash-in-the-plan stuff that gets dropped in a matter of days or weeks will leave you dissatisfied and sad. Vampire Weekend is pretty good though.

Personally, I prefer their afro-indie-pop songs over this electronic drivel. They lose their uniqueness and sound like all of the other sample-based bands that are already rocking the scene a lot better.

Horchata was still very Vampire Weekend sounding. That’s why its on Contra. This is only a b-side, I don’t think Contra will sound anything like this. This is probably like a remix of the regular “California English”.

just because a “b-side” sounds like something out of Animal Collective, it doesn’t mean the whole album will too. I’ve listened to the majority of the songs on Contra and it’s nothing like MPP. It’s still the Vampire Weekend I love and know.

Of course, once Animal Collective scores big with MPP, Vampire Weekend jump on the bandwagon.

My bet is that most bands will be trying to imitate AnCo in 2010. Starting with Vampire Weekend.
