Interpol’s Paul Banks’ first solo album under his own name is the unimaginatively titled Banks, which Merge will drop next week, but you can stream it now via YouTube. Don’t worry: the record’s far more unpredictable and complex than its title, and you can tell that right off the bat from first track “The Base,” which cuts from a moody minimalist ballad driven by a bubbly, looped guitar riff and slow-burning strings into something way bigger with a huge and unexpected – well, we’ll let you hear for yourself. We’re loving how effortlessly Banks builds complex, endlessly relistenable songs on top of simple looped guitar – “Arise, Awake” is another great example.
