Another Animal Collective record, another recorded live set teasing new material (remember the first time we heard “What Would I Want? Sky” following the release of Merriweather Post Pavilion?) – this time it’s “Crimson,” which the band have apparently been playing live for a while, but has never seen studio attention. Let’s hope for a castoff EP soon; you can still find Centipede HZ‘s broken-toy, abandoned-carnival staggering pulse in “Crimson,” but, as in Animal Collective’s best songs, dudes surprise you toward the song’s latter half with some very unexpected poppy elements: wandering guitar, emotional lyrics (“now my heart is taking over!”), clattering tribal percussion. Check it out.
