Beach Fossils live member Zachary Cole Smith’s early singles as DIIV (back when it was just Dive) hearkened a little to the project he was, at the time, best known for – jangly, interwoven guitars, bubbly dream-pop vibes, you know the deal – but his first release under the DIIV moniker, Oshin, available for streaming now, feels like the Cure here (“Human,” “Past Lives”), Nirvana there (“Air Conditioning,” “Doused”), and classic krautrock bands like Can and Neu! (those basslines!) everywhere. It’s gorgeous because it’s vaguely creepy: it summons up title-appropriate images of massive, vacant gray sea- and cloud-scapes. Check it out.
