GRAMMYS 2012

Now that Arcade Fire have won Album of the Year, you care about the GRAMMYs right? Right. Well, last night the nominations for the 2012 GRAMMYS were announced. As usual, they are this odd mix of critical darlings and top 40 pop culture-saturated earcandy. We won't go into depth in trying to analyze the way an academy hundreds of artists strong think, so we'll just share five things we learned and/or observed.

1. What? Bon Iver were nominated four times? Fun. Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Alternative Album. Further congrats to Justin Vernon who is probably contractually obligated to perform "Holocene" at the awards ceremony in February – think of the sales boost!
2. Kanye West is nominated 8 times, though both of his albums  – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Watch the Throne (fact: one of these is widely considered a modern-day classic) – somehow didn't beat out Bruno Mars or Rihanna in the Album of the Year race. Okay.
3. Rock is dead. Coldplay and Radiohead's predominately electronic singles ("Every Tear is a Waterfall" and "Lotus Flower," respectively) are nominated for Best Rock Performance.
4. Death Cab For Cutie is more alternative than Wilco, in case you didn't know.
5. Skrillex? Lol. Also: this tumblr is still funny.

And here are some of the nominations. The rest can be found here.
