Major Lazer “Sound of Siren” (feat. M.I.A. and Busy Signal)

Major Lazer Sound of Siren (feat. M.I.A. and Busy Signal) mp3

Late last night, Diplo announced, via Twitter, that Major Lazer will be releasing an EP in April with new material featuring vocals from “M.I.A, Busy Signal, Colliebudz, Lindi Ortega, Buraka Som Systema, Kicks Like a Mule and Thom Yorke“.

Major Lazer is letting us download “Sound of Siren” featuring M.I.A. and dancehall buffo Busy Signal, for free — however, the mp3 seems to cut short at the end. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is an unfinished version of the track. What ever state of completion its in, you can download “Sound of Siren” for free, below: Continue reading →

Joanna Newsom “Kingfisher”

Joanna Newsom Kingfisher listen

Drag City is streaming yet another new Joanna Newsom track, this time also giving us the tracklist to Newsom’s mammoth TRIPLE LP Have One On Me. “Kingfisher” is a delicate and smooth 9-minute is just another of 18 songs that span over two hours of gorgeous Joanna Newsom music. However, beautiful or not, I can’t really see myself listening to Have One On Me in one sitting.

Listen to “Kingfisher” below, and take a peek at the tracklist:

Yeasayer Odd Blood Album Review

LP Giveaway details at the end of the review.
Yeasayer Odd Blood Album Review albumreviewsYeasayer
Odd Blood
Secretly Canadian
out February 9th

89/100
[Rating Scale]
Buy it at Insound!

Yeasayer’s sophomore release, Odd Blood, kicks off with an awful track. Let’s just put it out there. “The Children” is the weakest song on the album – a plodding, strange, positively uninteresting tune with only slightly better lyrics. You may hear people try to tell you that it’s actually a good song. Or that you don’t “get it.” Those people are ridiculous. It’s a bad song. It ignores everything Yeasayer does well, and consequently pays the price. It sounds like a something made on GarageBand in about half an hour.

It is followed, however, by nine tracks of near perfection. Continue reading →

Erykah Badu “Window Seat”

Erykah Badu Window Seat mp3

In light of the announcement of the release of her forthcoming New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh, Erykah Badu seems to be on a leaking streak. Not that I’m complaining, of course. Return of the Ankh will be out on March 30th, and so far, Erykah Badu has posted the web-only bonus track “Jump Up In The Air and Stay There” featuring Lil Wayne on her website, and now also an album-track called “Window Seat” through her Twitter account. “Window Seat” was produced by Badu and features drums by ?uestlove from The Roots. It is also the first taste we get from Return of the Ankh. Think of this as this year’s “Honey“. You can stream or download it below: Continue reading →

Vampire Weekend “Ruby Soho” (Rancid Cover)

Vampire Weekend Ruby Soho (Rancid Cover) covers

True story: I heard “Ruby Soho” at a sushi bar last week and I instantly thought that Vampire Weekend would sound great performing this. And they do.

Everyone’s favorite chart-topping indie darlings stopped by a popular radio show, and covered Rancid’s “Ruby Soho”, an event to which I will ascribe cosmological significance to, given what happened at the sushi bar.

I’ve always felt that the best covers are those that wouldn’t sound or feel misplaced in an artist’s body of work. Vampire Weekend’s rendition “Ruby Soho” sounds like it would fit perfectly between “Campus” and “Bryn” on their self-titled debut — and that’s the highest praise I can ever give it. Download and listen to Vampire Weekend do “Ruby Soho” below: Continue reading →

Diamond Rings “Wait & See”

Diamond Rings Wait & See favorite songs

Following up on last year’s irresistibly charming “All Yr Songs“, Toronto’s Diamond Rings offers up “Wait & See”. Instantly you will notice that the fluffy cheese that was so warmly welcomed with its predecessor is pretty much gone. It’s grounded, more serious, yet you can’t help but feel it’s still filled-up-to-here with charm, fully equipped with the ironic cheapo drum machine that had initially pulled us into “All Yr Songs”.

John O’Regan, the man behind the drum machine, will be releasing “Wait & See” on a 7″ single, backed with “On Fire” via Tomlab. You can stream “Wait & See” below; I’d recommend it:

Jónsi “Go Do”

Jónsi Go Do favorite songs

Sigur Rós frontman, Jónsi, will be releasing his solo album, Go later this spring. If you recall, back in December, Jónsi gave away the gorgeous first single from Go, “Boy Lilikoi“, which you can still download if you follow that link.

The sunny and lively musical arrangements on Go are credited to Nico Muhly, who worked with Grizzly Bear on the gorgeous arrangements on Veckatimest; he is also responsible for the arrangements on Antony & The Johnsons’ The Crying Light. Jónsi and Nico’s brainchildren are a dream to listen to. “Go Do”, the latest one to sprout out, is cacophony of banging drums and other rattling percussion that is being lifted by the light and subtle beauty of a flute; it epitomizes the coming of Spring. So then it makes perfect sense that Jónsi will be releasing a Go Do EP on March 15th, a month prior to Go’s release. I really can’t think of a better way to usher in spring.

UPDATE: There is now a (super fantastic) music video!
