Deerhunter’s Badford Cox wants you to download this virtual 7″ single, released under his Atlas Sound moniker, for free on his blog. It features a fantastic cover of The Five Discs’ “Doctor” backed with a track called “The Screens.” I didn’t really get into Atlas Sound’s last album, Logos, but these tunes really hit the spot on a miserable Hump Day like today.
I was immediately drawn into “People C’mon” by Delta Spirit off their debut album, Ode to Sunshine. They have been compared to Cold War Kids, and with reason, but that’s not a bad thing in my book.
The piano melody about half way through the song combined with some “papapas” and “lalalas” by lead singer Matthew Vasquez make the song for me. Scratch that: everything makes this song–it’s simply just well put together. And hey, they’re the kind of band that uses trash can lids as an instrument. So if you’re into that sort of thing and don’t find it overly trite, then you’ll probably find yourself quite pleased and even have a new favorite band to keep an eye/ear/whatever out for.
Earlier today, I mentioned that we’ll be listening to a new Hot Chip album in February of next year, and now I can report that the new album will be called One Life Stand (amazing title) and it will hit shelves February 9th in the US and on the 8th in the UK.
According to Pitchfork via NME, One Life Stand features drumming from Charles Hayward of experimental 1970s group This Heat as well as Leo Taylor of London indie band the Invisible.
What’s better yet is that we can now listen to the first track off One Life Stand, “Take It In,” thanks to the ever-generous Pitchfork and Lala.com. Listen to it after the jump: Continue reading →
I never fully got into Weezer. Believe me, I tried. I’ve had my share of singalongs and even a few attempts at playing some of their songs on guitar. I am, however, a fan of Coldplay, which is why I had to share Weezer’s live cover of “Viva La Vida,” mainly because they don’t ruin it and possibly even do it some justice.
The original is no doubt better, especially since Weezer didn’t really add much to the song, but I could see myself getting pretty happy to have them play this at a show. Sounds like their fans definitely were. Listen/download the cover below: Continue reading →
2009 has been filled with great music from old favorites and new talent alike. But now that 2009 has almost reached its close, it’s time to start talking about the treasures that await us in 2010. Read on for an in-depth list of albums that are expected to be released in 2010, as well as those which have been running through the rumor mill for the last few weeks. Continue reading →
I’ve held off posting about Girls because of certain reservations I had about them. Specifically, I can’t listen to the lead singer’s voice for a long period of time. But whenever I do sit down to listen to their album, Album, I’m not overwhelmed or blown away, as their 9.1 Pitchfork rating might imply.
I will admit, however, that “Lust For Life,” as well as “Laura” and “Hellhole Ratface” are essential and should be required listening in 2009. But take these tracks out of the equation and you are left with little to get excited about — a directionless Elvis Costello/Brian Wilson tribute album.

Speakers opens to distortion, faceless moans and the words “silicone, saline, poison, inject me baby. I’m a free bitch, I’m a free bitch”. This is how Lady GaGa kicks off her most intricate and engaging song yet.
The tremendous chorus, “baby loves to dance in the dark, cos when he’s looking she falls apart” is heartbreaking and is empowered by a later lyric, “she looks good, but her boyfriend says she’s a tramp.”
“Dance In The Dark” has a fragile quality to it. The luminous synth feels strained, yet the vocal track resolute. The song’s sincere-sounding back story of the marginalization of women and potentially abusive relationships is a surprising change of pace for Lady GaGa, who has made a career out of sensationalizing fame and sex. This song got me dancing the second it exploded in my face, which is a plus in my book. I pretty much couldn’t stop moving some body part while sitting in my chair at my desk. It’s definitely got a very catchy and feel-good vibe to it. I can just imagine a large group of sweaty bodies dancing along to this at a club, all singing to the chorus of “We can’t ever be alone again.”
Chris Glover, better known as Penguin Prison (not sure why), is definitely onto something with this track and the previously PMA highlighted “Animal, Animal.” For a one man show, he’s got some well rounded music worth checking out. Continue reading →
