Wolf Parade’s Spencer Krug quietly dropped an excellently titled solo record, Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I’d Hoped, as Moonface last year, and he’s already plotting the follow-up, Heartbreaking Bravery, which was recorded with some assistance from Finnish band Siinai, Wolf Parade’s onetime tour partners. The record’s first single is the expansive, atmospheric new-wave cut “Teary Eyes and Bloody Lips,” an updated take on those sweeping, driving, soaring lovesick cuts pioneered in the ‘80s by bands like the Smiths and Echo and the Bunnymen. Undulating, panning synth drones build to sweeping, ecstatic glory over a kraut-y, motorik drum and bass groove and Krug’s typically bleak lyrics. Check out the track while you wait for the record, which’ll drop April 17 on Jagjaguwar.
