Gayngs – “Faded High”

Gayngs has one hell of a backstory. With almost 25 musicians recruited for the project, and an album based off of one jam session, which itself was based on parodying soft rock from the 1980’s – Relayted defies classification. However, the story behind the band has nothing to do with the tangible results, and it’s clear this record was not a joke. You don’t need to be familiar with “I’m Not In Love” by 10cc to listen to this album. I know I wasn’t. It’s easier to ignore the hype, stop trying to pick out the musicians you’ve heard of and just listen to the songs.

Gayngs makes music that is somewhere between soft rock and experimental music. It’s weird and it’s intriguing. Relayted is one of those albums that very deliberately, almost obviously, has each song merge seamlessly into the next. The whole album was reportedly recorded at 69bpm, and it’s not hard to believe; it has the fluid feel of a singular piece of music. A very slow piece of music, that is.

The album progresses at its own pace, with very long songs that often feel something like recorded jam sessions. The problem with this is that on the songs that don’t stick out from the pack it is easy to lose interest. Songs like “Spanish Platinum” are almost hard to listen to; trudging, boring and lasting far too long without any distinguishing features.

The other side of the coin is the good tracks on the album. The way Gayngs presents songs means the better songs are given a chance to really build on a groove, and turn into great songs on the first listen. And there are far more good than bad on the album as a whole. “The Gaudy Side of Town,” “Cry,” “No Sweat” and “Faded High” are all competitive for the title of album standout. Each showcase an entirely different emotional texture and sonic landscape, from the harsh piano and beleaguered singing of “No Sweat” to the borderline electro-pop synth lines of “Faded High.”

Relayted is an extremely diverse and interesting release and I’ve never heard anything quite like it. It is strange, and occasionally wonderful. Although it is by no stretch of the imagination flawless, it is a constantly changing and progressing album, and worth a listen.
