RATE SUBIZA:
[STARRATER]

With their fourth album and United States breakout, dance quartet Delorean deliver a playful, diverse electronic soundscape, named after the town in their home country of Spain where it was recorded, effortlessly humanized by warm synth and distant voices. To qualify the group’s most popular comparison, Subiza does sound like Animal Collective circa Merriweather Post Pavillion, but it also sounds like something cool and fresh and summery your favorite pop star might pillow-talk over on MTV. These two genres might sound like different worlds entirely, but they’re not very different at all – the genius of Delorean, and the pleasure of Subiza, lies in the fact that they’ve realized this.

The band’s name, a nod to classic eighties time-travel film series Back to the Future, might help sum up some of the aesthetic of Subiza – it’s bright, magical, occasionally throwbacky – but all in all the comparison doesn’t really hold water. Subiza is graceful modern pop, heavily indebted to the technological age (and bands who have worked with similar machinery before). Songs like “Grow” and “Simple Graces” are pure pop gems: warm, positive, clubby drum machine and layered vocals. While Subiza might not be anything out-of-the-blue new, it’s certainly enjoyable.

I’ve been following Delorean for a while now and they’re amazing. They’ve created their own genre and I love it!

WOW. A really great album from Delorean, could possibly make my Top 10 of the year…its ironic how my itunes first has Delorean and then Discovery underneath it, which is a great way to follow.

Great record! Feels like one, long ass track…which can be a good thing or a bad thing.

P.S. Genevieve, Subiza is misspelled in the otherwise great, concise review!

Saw these guys back in the spring and got to hear a few of these songs live before release. Definitely an amazing live band, and I was surprised at how well the songs translated to recordings. A+ work.

I saw them live at SXSW 2008- they are A-MAZING!
It’s good to see that they’re becoming bigger and bigger, definitely deserve it! Those kids work hard at it!

get out your snorkels, it’s Delorean. i could try to use words like silver and synth and bliss as prefixes for pop, but the bottom line is that i listen to Delorean when i want to feel like i’m under water… on ecstasy. every song is like a shimmering, neon, crustacean band medley from the Little Mermaid… if they could play KORGs under water… on ecstasy. PMA, thanks for turning me on to them. Delorean, thanks for turning me on.
