After seeing James Murphy in concert back in 2007, I was blown away by LCD Soundsystem’s ability to infuse emotion into the beats of an album meant for the dance floor. The one-man studio band’s sophomore album, Sound of Silver — now looked at as one of the decade’s best albums — stayed with me for a while, a nine-track masterpiece.

So Murphy already has a reputation for creating electronic music with heart and soul. After penning decade defining, introspective songs that will surely stay with us for years to come, you’d think James Murphy is done with the snarky, hipper-than-thou music geek vibe that so defined LCD’s self-titled debut, right?

Not entirely. This Is Happening, ’s third and potentially final album, is literally split down the middle. Not loaded from front to back with with witty, biting reality check jams that made up the self-titled LP, nor crammed with the dance-fused, 70′s art-rock anthems of SilverHappening is half and half. LCD Soundsystem’s brief, but influential discography summarized neatly, in just over an hour.

Before getting too critical, let’s talk about the masterpieces. “All I Want” and “I Can Change” provide a 1-2 punch that nears the extraordinary heights of the “All My Friends” and “Someone Great” double-whammy. “All I Want” relies on a crunching guitar riff and Murphy’s strong, solemn vocals. Most important, Murphy gives the simplest lyrics the kind of depth that make his albums stand out from others: “wait…for the day,” and “look…for the girl” are delivered with pretty remarkable tenderness for a guy who can be so bitter. What seems like an overpowering guitar melody ends up being secondary to the even more powerful singing from Murphy. The closing cry of “take me home” is undeniably heart-wrenching, demonstrating LCD Soundsystem’s remarkable ability to give building songs massive payoffs.

As great as “All I Want” is, “I Can Change,” my favorite track on the album, lifts This Is Happening to another level. “Change,” gliding over a shimmering, synth-driven beat, is carried by Murphy’s smooth voice, reaching a remarkable falsetto at the song’s best moment. “The feeling goes away,” he sings, just before launching into the song’s refrain: “never change, never change, never change.” Building to a cathartic climax, “Change” showcases LCD at its absolute strongest.

This Is Happening-opener “Dance Yrself Clean” kicks off the album magnificently. Murphy is in full-on soul man mode here, wailing his lyrics like the Cold War Kids’ Nathan Willett. “Home,” the album’s closing track, brims with optimism (with lyrics like “we can shut the door on terrible times”) and caps the album off right.

Then there is “Drunk Girls,” the album’s predictable first single. While many LCD fans despise this song, to me it’s a reminder of the balance that makes Murphy so great. Sure, he can give the reflective, 9-minute jams, but he can also give catchy, anthemic 3-minute singles that, in a perfect world, would become dance floor necessities.

But not everything on Happening is necessary. For example, “One Touch” is “Get Innocuous” without the same growing intensity that made Sound of Silver’s opener so perfect. “Somebody’s Calling Me” takes a really cool piano riff, blends it with really cool whispered vocals from Murphy, and then blows it with an overdose of heavy synths and noises. It even works, but only for a bit. Not all 7 minutes.

“Pow Pow,” the album’s definite grower, brings Murphy back to doing his favorite thing: talk-singing and ripping on things that he doesn’t like. Murphy’s swagger and the catchy, hypnotic chorus both carry “Pow Pow” for a solid few minutes. But not for all 8 minutes.

Noticing a trend? While the excessive numbers on Sound of Silver were still gems, some of This Is Happening’s longer tracks are just too long. But now I’ve let my inner Murphy get the best of me, and I’ve ranted too long. Perhaps with Sound of Silver, LCD Soundsystem has set the bar too high for itself. But with the many standouts on the album and the bliss they provide on their own, it’s not too hard to think that Murphy could have topped himself once again with a little less jamming and ranting.

84 — Excellent. One of best offerings of the year, but may only appeal to fans of that genre. [Rating Scale]

It’s a solid 90 for me. Best of the Year so far, along with Beach House’s Teen Dream.

Being LCD Soundsystem’s last album, I expected something that would definitely blow the previous ones out of the water, however I was mildly disappointed!

My favorite tracks:

Dance Yrself Clean – it seriously puts a smile on my face, and makes all those bad days go away.. I love belting it out on the car ride to and from work.. :)

Pow Wow – Fun fun track with quirky lyrics that seriously bring back the old LCD..

Worst tracks:

Drunk Girls – the worst track of the album, no matter how many times I gave it a try.. and no matter how many remixes I heard.. its annoying period.

All I Want – Intro reminds me of The Strokes, so not the LCD sound I know and love.

All in all … I give the album a 85/100.. and I still can’t believe they chose Drunk Girls to be the first single!

I love this album. Dance Yrself Clean is my favorite track, it starts off the album perfectly. It took me a little while to get used to Drunk Girls, but it’s definitely growing on me. I can’t wait to listen to it all again!

The opening song on this album really had me excited for the rest of the album, but “Drunk Girls” was kinda a let down for the 2nd song. But, the album continued to progress and redeemed itself…89/100.

I guess I have bad taste but I actually enjoyed Drunk Girls, well actually I just really enjoyed the video for Drunk Grills. Drunk panda’s – I like.
Album as a whole 86/100

Drunk Girls is really good. I always have and probably always will have a hard time taking LCD seriously, because I don’t think they ever really mean to be all that serious, and I love them for it.

Id settle this album in a good 89/100.

Incredible “Pow pow” and “You wanted a hit”. The most underrated song in the album (haven’t seen a single mention to the song in the last three reviews I’ve read).

A great chance to rediscover LCD (shame it’s the last one)

loved the the lyrics of “You wanted a hit” and “I can change”
hated that this is the last LCD Soundsytem’s album..
hated “Drunk Girls”..

I cannot stop listening to Dance Yrself Clean, All I Want, I Can Change, and Home. Although Drunk Girls and Pow Pow are nothing special, I would say this is probably the best LCD album yet. 94/100.

I would easily rate this album a 98/100. I would score it higher, but, I would like to imagine that James Murphy will kill it again next time around, so i’ll leave him a couple points to improve. I have tickets for NYC SOLD OUT!

This album is fantastic!!! Great follow-up to the looming Sound of Silver. It seems like all of the tracks are skillfully mastered pieces of art, not just song a minutre garbage that other artists create. Great job!!!

I really dig 7 of the 9 tracks. I’ve tried to like Drunk Girls and One Touch but I ended up deleting both from my computer and mp3 player. I agree that a couple songs are just too long and sound really close to being Sound of Silver tracks, so I would give it a 85/100. Dance Yrself Clean and I Can Change are amazing!

The album is absolutely incredible — but would you expect any less from James Murphy? Though no moment mixes emotion and dance as well as “All My Friends” or “Someone Great,” “This is Happening” is another solid album in the LCD Soundsystem discography. Obligatory party single “Drunk Girls” recalls “Daft Punk Is Playing At My House” and “North American Scum” and while the lyrics are not the strongest, the song is a good introduction to the album.

Highlights include nine minute album opener “Dance Yrself Clean” which begins with Murphy crooning over a simple drum beat before an onset of synths washes over the track and optimistic closer “Home.” The band presents it’s most likely candidate for song of the decade status in “All I Want” which features David Bowie-esque guitars and the emotional depth of lyrics which elevated “All My Friends.”

Despite Carles of Hipster Runoff recently asking Panda Bear to leak his album to “save” 2k10, LCD Soundsystem prove with their third release that 2010 will certainly go down as a year filled with fantastic music.

94/100

I totally agree with the comment about him being able to put such amazing emotion with beats that you can’t help but dance to. Your review is totally spot on. And this album deserves a 93/100.

pow wow is wow. and you wanted a hit might be my favorite. he’s so subtle. i hardly know a band whose lyrics entertain me more. dance yrslf clean was of course also a revelation, when it first surfaced. i’m so excited about this record. it’s one of my favorites so far this year and they really managed to make three outstanding albums that each have their unique qualities!

I have a problem with this album, at some point, it lacks melody, it’s solid, but raw, on the other hand it’s definetely too long. The opening track is classic LCD, creating a proper composition in terms of songwriting. This is happening may lack a catchy hit, although it’s more mature. They concentrate on emotions in lyrics, they dug deeper. It’s more complexed album, this is what it makes it so cool – plentitude of references Murphy creates. For what it’s worth, it may be the strongest point of this album: complex simplicity of references.

Mick May 19, 2010 at 8:16 am

Might be his best yet. Murphy does it the way only Murphy can. We can hear him compete with his somehow very human-like electronic sounds while he slowly builds his songs to masterpieces.

‘All I Want’ comes close but in the end can’t beat ‘All My Friends’ from Sound of Silver, still, ‘This is Happening’ as a whole beats Sound of Silver. I actually like the long tracks on this album better then on Silver. Though I must say that Drunk Girls is pretty annoying. I rate the album as one of the best of the year. A 90/100

lola May 19, 2010 at 10:20 am

I’d give it an 85. Definitely agree that it may not carry a universal appeal, but is a fantastic offering nonetheless.

Veer Kothari May 19, 2010 at 11:40 am

I’d agree with the 84 rating. This album only appeals to LCD fans, many of my friends who don’t listen to LCD didn’t like many of the songs I played for them.

This is now, and will probably end up being, my favorite album of this year, and will definitely be one of my favorite albums of all time.

Reply

Joe May 20, 2010 at 3:12 am

I’ll roll with a 92/100. I Can Change, Pow Pow, and Drunk Girls are my favorite songs so far, but that’s likely to change after I give it a few more listens. I Can Change and Pow Pow hold a special place in my heart after seeing them at Coachella this year, and they absolutely killed both songs. I think I enjoy Drunk Girls so much because it feels like a completely different direction from most other LCD songs, but still manages to keep the same “edge” that their songs all have.

As a whole, the album is great and will only get better the more I listen to it, and I sure hope this won’t be the last album we get from LCD.

“Drunk Girls” is basically (unoriginal observation ahead) the Velvet Underground’s “White Light/White Heat” but sped up and with more partying, and with terrific quasi-Zen lines like “drunk girls know that love is an astronaut / it comes back but it’s never the same.” How can that annoy people? I guess not everybody loves “North American Scum” either, though, so I suppose it’s just taste. I love ‘em both.

A pretty incredible work; Love to see Murphy caught in the middle of several electronic environments- somewhat calm in the beginning of “Dance Yrself Clean” to frantic (as if the band’s being attacked by pandas?) in “Drunk Girls.” I’ll give it an 88/100.

I love how 18 minutes of awesomeness is packed into just two songs. Dance Yrself Clean and You Wanted a Hit are tops. I give it an Indigo on a scale of ROYGBIV.

I would give this album a 10 out of 10. It has everything any lcd fan/music person in general would want. It’s got the speaking line’s and then yelling a few lines thing originally from Losing Me Edge, etc on Pow Pow, it has the awesome synth drop in Dance Yrself Clean (my favorite on the album), it’s got non-8 minute-long jams like Drunk Girls if you don’t like the long ones, it’s got poppy-er songs like All I Want and I Can Change, it’s got some more standard electronic songs (one touch, You wanted a Hit), and finally two plain awesome songs to finish the album. Every song on it is stellar in my opinion, and there is so much variety. Plus, since the songs are long, it doesn’t feel like it is just a mash of different things – you get ample amounts of everything.

Amazing shows last week in NYC. I didn’t but the poster because I was hoping in the back of my mind I would win this? The album was great, pow pow may take some people a couple listenings to finally enjoy, and drunk girls on the first run, well, not what I expected. The album will be in collections for a long time. Well done mr Murphy.
