Last week Animal Collective surprised fans with the excellent new single Honeycomb / Gotham, and now we’ve learned that the band will release Centipede Hz, the long-awaited follow up to their 2009 masterwork Merriweather Post Pavilion, in September. There’s no official word on a tracklist, so we can’t be sure if “Honeycomb” or “Gotham” have made the cut, but we have this sinking feeling they won’t.
Our only clue as to what the album may have in store for us comes in the form of a cryptic video that spews out random words and phrases like “Moonjock,” “Today’s Supernatural” and “Monkey Riches.” Logic tells us these are song titles but we really never know with these guys. (I mean, they’re probably song titles.)
