Swearin's premiere single from their sophomore LP Surfing Strange was album opener "Dust in the Gold Sack," which, with its layers of sunny guitar haze and smart, cutting lyrics from frontwoman Allison Crutchfield, might wind up one of our favorite songs of the year. We're happy to report the rest of the record lives up to the promise of that first taste - Crutchfield's joined on vocal duties by fellow guitarist Kyle Gilbride and bassist Keith Spencer, and we're left wondering just how one band winds up with not one, not two, but three excellent garage-rock songwriters. Spencer's contribution, "Melanoma," sounds like a lost R.E.M. track until mind-numbing guitar sludge kicks in; the end product is particularly affecting. Check it out - you can pick up a copy in a record store on November 5.
