It's the beginning of the week(!), which means there's a bunch of new music to listen to. This time we have three albums we want to highlight, LiarsMess, Future Islands'Singles and Freddie Gibbs & Madlib'sPiñata. They all street March 25, they're all worth your time and, occasionally, reverent devotion. So, let's get started. (Use the arrows to navigate between albums.)
The new Liars album is really fucking good. It's like they took the best bits of WIXIW and jacked it up to 19. It's consistently awesome, but never more awesome than the first eight-and-half minute aural assault of "Mask Maker" and "Vox Turned D.E.D." (though the one-two KO of "Can't Hear Well" and "Mess on a Mission" feels a bit like manna sent by a god from the future).
Future Islands, Singles
Future Islands have been really great for years now, but 2014 is when it all seems to be happening for them. They've got an instantly classic Letterman performance under their belt and they shut shit down at SXSW last week. This is their moment.
Freddie Gibbs / Madlib, Piñata
Did we say Piñata streets March 25? Nah, man. This one's out right now. The collaboration between hardened rapper Freddie Gibbs and virtuoso producer Madlib has been something of a dream come true for classic hip hop heads, who put nothing above a great soul sample. (Nor should they.) Piñata has been a long time coming - Gibbs and 'lib first hooked up more than two years ago - but now that it's here, it goes down like butter. It also boats an impressive list of guest artists, including Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, Raekwon, Domo Genesis, Ab-Soul, Casey Veggies and more.
