Ambient music’s patron saint is one Brian Eno, of ‘70s art rockers Roxy Music and an extensive solo career, and he might (unfortunately) be currently on the lips of young people only because of MGMT’s recent namecheck. Great though that song is, Eno’s work is approximately eight million times greater: he’s credited as a musician, composer, producer, music theorist, singer, and visual artist, and has been involved in rock music in almost every way, shape, and form, since 1971. Recently, Eno has collaborated with David Byrne (for 2008’s Everything That Happens Will Happen Today) and filmmaker Peter Jackson (for the score of Jackson’s 2009 film The Lovely Bones).

Eno’s first solo album since 2005’s Another Day on Earth, Small Craft on a Milk Sea, will be released on indie label Warp on November 2. It’s reportedly inspired by soundtrack albums and film scores. Indeed, the first song up for stream, “2 Forms of Anger,” a haunting song with spiky, sparse, clean guitar and constant, rumbling drums that sound like thunder approaching across the desert, is chilling and ambient enough to have its roots in some edgy art film.
