"3" is the first single off Britney Spears' new greatest hits compilation album, The Singles Collection, out November 24th. "3" was released to radio this morning, making its debut on New York's Z100. Listen to it here:
Frankly, the song is a hot mess. Who ever told Britney it was a good idea to release a single about a Peter, Paul, and Mary threesome should be shot (hello, Max Martin). This single doesn't celebrate the first 10 years of Britney Spears' career, as it should, but instead comes off as a cheeky Ke$ha track.
Britney Spears, for me, was always an artist who could get away with the auto-tune effect. It was never used against us; it was always for the protection of our ears (kind of like Lady GaGa's sunglasses protect our eyes). But "3," is unabashedly auto-tuned the fuck out. And it bugs me.
I do have to give the song some credit though. It was, after all, written and produced by Max Martin. In other words, despite its ridiculous lyrics, it's still catchy as hell (read:If U Seek Amy). The verses are completely uninteresting, but the chorus is immensely catchy and, if you're a true Britney fan, the middle 8 will probably knock you off your feet. If it doesn't, give it a few more listens. But after today, I doubt that I will be listening to "3," but I knew this all along. I can't remember the last time I played "My Prerogative" or "Do Somethin'."
