When James Mercer and Danger Mouse revealed that their EP Meyrin Fields was recorded at the same time as their self-titled debut, they had claimed the songs did not have the same feel as the album, but were too good to be B-sides. That seems to be an understatement. After hearing first track “Windows,” a new track has surfaced, “Heartless Empire,” that sounds nothing like any past Broken Bells songs.
Clouded in distortion and beginning with fun bouncy keyboards that remain intact throughout, it's dark and happy all at once. The rock influences are definitely more prominent as well, and Mercer sounds more subdued than usual. Meyrin Fields comes out March 29th.
