Earl-Sweatshirt

Barring honorary member Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt's probably the most interesting member of Odd Future –– on his self-titled 2010 debut, he polarized everyone on the internet rapping intermittently about rape and eating breakfast, and the parent-mandated exile that followed made him an enigmatic catchphrase –– but don't let that distract you from the fact that he might be the collective's most talented rapper. He proves that in spades on new track "Chum," dropping smart, snappy, and utterly relentless retrospective verses about his tough childhood, his relationship with his parents, and his nascent career over a bubbly piano line; the whole thing feels darkly nostalgic in a way that evokes classic hip hop. "Get up off the pavement, brush the dirt up off my psyche," Earl concludes, and you know he will. Earl's been spreading hints about a new record; here's hoping it drops soon.
