Sufjan Stevens has shared another tremendous song from is gorgeous new album, Carrie & Lowell, due out March 31. Like his best songs, "Should have Known Better" is deceptively simple, and like most of the songs on Carrie & Lowell, it's centered around death, his mother's death. It's gorgeous, though thick with melancholy—the "black shroud"—but before that shroud can become suffocating, a cheerful keyboard tune cuts in, prompting Sufjan to remind us to concentrate on the seeing; nothing can be changed. Death my surround us, follow us at every turn, but don't back down.
