If you count all of the records he did under the moniker Smog, Apocalypse is Bill Callahan's fourteenth record since he started releasing music in 1990. The primary consensus surrounding the record since it came out on April 5th, is that the opening track, “Drover” is a fucking masterpiece.
An increasingly poignant ballad about the American South, “Drover” is a grower, becoming louder and grander as Callahan's dry baritone moves gracefully amongst the array of strings that carry it. Even when the accompaniment is quiet, his vocals pull it through. Though they bear a distinct country resonance, “Drover” is ultimately a folk cut, and it shows.
