The Strokes'generally solid new album Comedown Machine is out today. It's full of some great songs, and some other songs we've probably already forgotten. One of the great ones, one we didn't get around to mentioning in our review but wanted to point out, is the album's somewhat divisive closing number, "Call It Fate, Call It Karma." The track, clearly inspired by Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti's side project Little Joy, sounds like nothing the band has ever done – a bittersweet treat from a band incessantly asked to repeat past triumphs. The song – more of an afterthought than a song, really – moves like a sepia-toned dream, a very, very pretty dream; a beauty stuck out of time.
