Toro y Moi has a new album coming out next month called What For?, his proper follow-up to 2013's funky Anything In Return. (Last year he released a dance album Michael under the moniker Les Sins.) We've already heard two tracks from What For? — the great first single "Empty Nesters" and most recently, "Buffalo". Today comes a third new track, "Run Baby Run", and it should make it pretty clear that Chaz Bundwick has hung up his Prince-aping chillwave hat, at least for the time being. Somewhat surprisingly, Bundwick has turned to making bona fide indie rock, that once-dominant and recently-beleaguered genre that has seen something of an uptick in 2015, thanks to some badass ladies (Sleater-Kinney's No Cities To Loveand Courtney Barnett's Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Sit easily rank among the year's greatest triumphs). That's not to say Chaz is going full-90s on us; "Run Baby Run" is chock full of '60s psych pop melodies and those stacked Beatlesque drums Tame Impala are so very fond of. Check it out below:
What For? is out April 7th via Carpark Records.
