Sunday Links

Here at PMA, we love our weekends. We like to catch a show or two, go to a movie, catch up with “RL” stuff, or just veg. With the exception of a podcast every now and then, you probably won’t see a post on Sunday ’round here. I will let my blogfriends provide the goodies on Sunday.

  • MFR has an mp3 for the Hood Internet’s latest — “Two Weeks of Hip Hop” mashing Grizzly Bear and Dead Prez together. Groovy.

Download
Grizzly Bear vs Dead Prez - Two Weeks of Hip-Hop (The Hood Internet)

  • While we’re on MFR, check out their fantastic series, The Radiohead Model. It’s a great read.
  • The always amazing Burial and Four Tet are releasing a split 12″ called Moth/Wolf Cub. Catch some mp3 samples at GvsB
  • Patrick Wolf covers Lady GaGa’s “Poker Face,” all at The Music Slut.
  • Eminem’s shit-tastic music video for the shittier-tastic “3AM” can be found at Mossip.
  • A great “Sleepyhead” remix over at OHH! Crapp..
  • Estelle & Kanye work together once again on this new DJ Class joint. Find the mp3 over at Pigeons & Planes.
  • NPR is streaming the new Conor Oberst album. Listen to it here.

Phoenix Playing SNL Next Week!

Wow…talk about a quick rise to fame.

After releasing two brilliant singles from their upcoming album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, the frenchie-pop-rockers will be rocking SNL on April 4th, on a Seth Rogen-hosted episode.

I realize that SNL is maintaining its indie cred by getting awesome Pitchfork-rockers to play (TV On The Radio, Death Cab, Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes), but Phoenix surprised me, mostly due to the fact that they just haven’t MADE IT in the way that the aforementioned bands have. Those four all had ridiculous album sales, whereas Phoenix’s first few cds were loved by the indie-rock crew and not much else. Those four all had some radio play, while I haven’t heard “Listzomania” or “1901″ on the radio once. So although I am in no way criticizing SNL’s decision to get such a great band on their show, I’m just a tad surprised. All that’s for sure is that it will lead to a HEAVY sales boost for the band, who will most likely rock their insanely catchy songs incredibly well live.

Let Me Run This By You…

I’ve had something running through my mind for a while now. Part of me wants to run along with it, but the other part of me is sort of scared shitless. If you follow me on twitter, you may have seen me tweet about PMA events. I do so joking around, mostly. But over the last couple of weeks, I have been seriously considering using Pretty Much Amazing to host and promote live events. I certainly think I have the means to. Read on for what I have in mind… Continue reading →

March Music Madness ‘09

March Music Madness 09 aside

We Listen For You is just about to kick off their second annual March Music Madness. The Marc Music Madness is a competitive 64 band/solo artist tournament that runs concurrently with the NCAA Basketball tournament. It’s set to kick off this Thursday, March 19th. The bands who move on to the next round is determined by the fans, so make sure you vote and check in regularly (Listen to this if in case you’re completely confused).

This year’s lineup is pretty intense. Some are no-brainers, but others are a bit tougher. M.I.A. vs Vampire Weekend? Deerhunter vs Bloc Party? Beirut vs Okkervil River? Feist vs Cool Kids? Decemberists vs Sigur Ros? And that’s just the first round…

Gigamesh – Creepy Fingers / PMA Low-Down

Gigamesh Creepy Fingers / PMA Low Down aside

Hey, just wanted to address a few things that have been going on around here. I call this the PMA Low-Down.

  • First of all, a congratulations and a thousand thank-you’s are in order here — PMA just got it’s 1,000th fan, or “watcher” on the Hype Machine (the first ever music-blog social networking site, sort of). What do the cool kids say? 1,000 fans can’t be wrong? Ha, maybe I’m gettin ahead of myself. Anywho, if you have an account @ HypeM, you should “watch” us too! And if you don’t have an account, you should get one!
  • Second of all, I want to explain to all of the remixers that entered PMA’s first ever remix contest something: winning the Gifted remix contest doesn’t get you your own show on PMA just like that — I plan on hosting more remix contests in the future, and if you want to win the title of being PMA’s Resident DJ, you have to enter in all of them, and WIN! Basically, the first DJ to win 3 remix contests gets the title. Look out for future remix contests for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and DiscoTech.
  • I also want to thank all of the people who have signed up to the newly premiered pmaBLAST. The first blast will be found in your inboxes this Saturday, so keep an eye out! I’m completely stoked that this first issue will reach over 1,000 people! I have big plans for this, but we can’t do it alone. The pmaBLAST is looking for sponsors (for cool giveaways) and artists to work with (for cooler exclusives) — contact me for more info. A wise man once told me that we are one big musical community and we need to work together to achieve greatness.
  • The last thing I wanted to address is a bit more serious. I wanted to talk about leaked tracks. More often than not, I will not be offering high-profile leaked tracks available for download. It’s as hard for me to announce this as it is for you to hear it, trust me. Sometime’s I get so excited about a song, that I have this almost uncontrolable urge to share it. It doesn’t even have to be on the blog, I am constantly forwarding music to my friends and family. But I understand that while PMA gets bigger and bigger, my urge to share the music I love becomes less and less innocent. I will try my best, however, you let you guys listen to the songs via streaming alternatives to downloading like IMEEM or YouTube.

I don’t want to leave this post ending on a sour note, so here is an *exclusive* track from Gigamesh (my favorite member of the fantastic DiscoTech), just for you, loyal readers. It’s called “Creepy Fingers.” It’s sticky and dirty, and I like it. Continue reading →
